Noeshe Jan: enjoy your meal in Farsi
Delen
If you already have a jar of Wortel Wonder at home or have browsed our website, the words 'noeshe jan' will surely have caught your attention. We are not talking about a Dutch boy named Jan here, but we wish you bon appétit with these words!
Noeshe jan (نوش جان) means in Persian (Farsi) something like 'may it be a delight for your soul'. Quite poetic, isn't it.
Now it may be that you hear an Iranian say noeshe joen instead of noeshe jan. What is the difference?
Very simple: noeshe jan is a bit more formal and is more commonly used in written language, while noeshe joen is more for everyday conversations.
This happens with more words in Farsi too. For example, bread is officially nan, but in spoken language we say noen.
Now we can hear you thinking from afar ''but how do you pronounce it?!'.
This is how you pronounce noeshe jan:
- Noe as in “noodle” (but shorter).
- Sheh as in the English “Sherlock”.
- Jan/joen with the j as in the English name Jack.
So the next time you are enjoying a recipe with Wortel Wonder together with Jan or someone else, try it: Noeshe jan or Noeshe joen!
